Gap Year Takeaways pt. 1
When I decided to take a gap year from the University that I once dreamed of, I was petrified. I truly never imagined that I would leave New York City for the rest of my life. However, by committing to a year off of school, I received a crash course in self-reinvention, an up-close view of global politics, a deep dive into the wedding industry, and a whirlwind European tour fueled by Christmas market mulled wine and the weight of untold family history. And you know what? I wouldn’t trade a second of it.
The Power of Positive Self Talk
I spent the first part of my gap year actively rewiring my neural pathways—yes, that sounds dramatic, but trust me, unlearning negative self-talk is a full-time job. The takeaway? The way you speak to yourself shapes how you present yourself to the world. Self-doubt is out. Owning the room (or the runway) is in.
Gaining Insight into the Wedding Industry
I worked as a wedding photographer’s assistant, which provided an inside look at the meticulous planning and execution that goes into capturing milestone moments. Beyond the technical skills, I learned about the business side of the industry—how vendors navigate logistics, how clients communicate their visions, and how adaptability is key in fast-paced environments. Observing the dynamics of a high-pressure, client-driven industry was both educational and inspiring.
Interning for the Romanian Government
For two months, I lived in Romania and interned for Dr. Mihai Precup, the Secretary of State of Romania. This opportunity allowed me to engage in policy discussions, contribute to research, and coauthor a book on State-Owned Enterprises and their alignment with OECD principles. It was a rare chance to understand governance from a hands-on perspective and to see how economic policies shape national and international landscapes.
Exploring European History and Culture
Traveling across Europe during the holiday season was both enriching and eye-opening. From historic sites to bustling Christmas markets, every location provided a new perspective and deepened my appreciation for cultural diversity. Immersing myself in different environments broadened my understanding of history, traditions, and the interconnectedness of societies.
Writing My Family’s Untold Story
Perhaps the most transformative part of this semester was nearing the completion of my first novel—a project that brings to life my family’s escape from communist Romania. These are stories that were too painful or risky for them to share, and it has been both an honor and a responsibility to document them. The process reinforced the importance of storytelling as a means of preserving history and shaping future narratives.
The Final Takeaway
If the first half of my gap year has taught me anything, it’s the value of adaptability, the importance of self-reflection, and the impact of meaningful work. Whether in government, business, or creative endeavors, the key to growth is stepping outside of comfort zones and embracing new challenges.
Here’s to another semester of learning, exploring, and making an impact. Stay tuned to hear about round two of European adventures, my journey to Everest, and exciting projects!
Xoxo,
Annie
